How to break down techniques to figure out how to make them as efficient as possible or to figure out the most efficient/best counter to a technique?
This was a question that was brought up by one of my Mind Blown Jiu Jitsu Club Members.
The short answer is to question everything....
For me as I was coming up through Jiu-Jitsu it was never good enough for me to just learn a technique. What I was really interested in were all the things that surround the technique and trying to really understand what makes it work.
These are the things I work to master in every technique.
What situation should I apply the technique and when was the best time? If the timing is off, the technique is going to require too much strength or not work at all.
How could I bait my opponent or set them up to give me what I wanted? For maximum efficiency we always try to use our opponents movements against them. So I was always trying to find the necessary reaction to the get the technique to work and see what exactly I could do to cause that reaction. You often hear use what they give you, but I think a better way to look at is how can I get them to Give Me what I want.
What were the things my opponent could do to counter the technique? Is there anything I can do to prevent them from doing the movement to counter? This was a big question for me on whether I would take the time to include a technique in my arsenal or not.
Full Body Utilization.
Am I using my whole body to help me or just using one or two limbs? Are there any limbs free, not doing anything that could help? We are really good on focusing on one part of the body but, how do we use everything together, doing different things but for the achievement of a common goal is not always easy to see.
As for defenses and counters, for every technique there are always multiple steps necessary for any technique to work. If you can stop any one of the steps then you can prevent the technique from working.
I'll leave you with that for now, there is A LOT more coming on this concept and idea soon.
